KLUP Post 1/4/2008 Venue Tax
The battle for the projects to be funded with the venue tax is just beginning to heat up. John Thurman of Heart of Texas Realty here with Today’s San Antonio Business Journal News Feature. Business Journal writer Scott Bailey reported that in January, Bexar County officials will begin to firm up a plan to present to voters later next year that would result in a lengthy extension of the venue tax to help fund an array of community projects, possibly including a riverwalk extension, a performing arts center, and an intercollegiate athletics complex. The catch is that once the tax is allocated, other projects that may appear on the horizon may have to wait until another time to be considered. Such projects could easily be an National League Football franchise or a major league baseball franchise. The tax is comprised of a combination of hotel occupancy and rental car taxes that are paid by visitors and not generally by local citizens. San Antonio already pre auditioned for an NFL franchise when it hosted the New Orleans Saints after their New Orleans stadium was severely damaged by hurricane Katrina.
